Calvary Cares Day

Saturday, March 20th.

On Saturday, March 20, 2010, just under 500 volunteers gathered in the lobby at Calvary at 8:30 am to meet their team leaders, have breakfast, hear last minute instructions, pray for the day and then go out to 14 different locations in Clearwater to spread the love of Jesus. Altogether, they worked 1717 hours, which is a little over 71 days, served over 800 people and had conversations with over 700 people, all with the desire to build a relationship in order to bring those to dynamic life in Jesus Christ.

At Wood Valley Park, Calvary joined efforts with the Suncoast Boys and Girls Club to host our second annual block party, complete with crafts, music, games, bouncies, a pony ride, a fire truck and a picnic lunch.  Over 300 bags of groceries were given away to over 300 people.  Many of the families from Eisenhower Elementary School attended along with their principal, Sandra Downes.  It was a sweet time of reconnecting with many.

At New Beginnings on Sunset Point Road, Calvary helped host our first annual block party for the neighborhood.  There were bouncies, games, flag football, and crafts along with a picnic.  New Beginnings is starting a partnership with Sandy Lane Elementary School and part of Saturday a team of volunteers did some major landscaping at the school.  Guests were also invited to come back for the next several months to participate in some informational seminars about successful parenting and financial success.

At Palm Lake Village we had a team from Calvary Christian High School on Friday as well as a team of 117 volunteers on Saturday do odd jobs for about 150 residents.  Each was invited to lunch in their new community center and was given a gift bag.  Another team provided and served the lunch and even the children participated by making a gift and cards.  Our hope is to start a Bible study there soon and to find some Life Groups who might want to adopt a street and help them out more often than twice a year.

Other projects included painting a UPARC home, landscaping at RCS Grace House, yard clean up at Kimberly Home and the Pregnancy Center of Pinellas County, cooking a meal to serve at the Homeless Emergency Project, sorting clothes and baby items at the Bay Area Pregnancy Center, and serving breakfast at the Salvation Army Joy House.

Saturday was truly a blessed day for many in Clearwater, but all those volunteers were blessed too by serving others.  Our next Calvary Cares Day is scheduled for March 2011.

Additionaly, there are many ongoing opportunities to bless our community:
